Come Ride the Wind of the Cottonwood Valley Trails!  The course has been redesigned to include both the north and south sides of Red Rock National Conservation Area, as well as the New 33 Loop.  Do not miss the opportunity to experience the incredible vistas and vast array of desert landscape.

COURSE

The loop course is run counterclockwise and will consist of single-track and dirt roads.  There are some areas of flat, fast gravel and dirt, but the majority of the terrain is rocky and technical.  Gaiters are highly recommended.

100M will consist of three 31.3-mile loops plus a 6.67 mile loop*
Total Elevation Gain – 7098ft

100K will consist of two 31.3-mile loops
Total Elevation Gain – 4292ft

50K will consist of a single 31.3-mile loop
Total Elevation Gain – 2146ft

Half Marathon will consist of two 6.67-mile loops
Total Elevation Gain – 1320ft

10K will consist of one 6.67-mile loop
Total Elevation Gain – 660ft

*Runners have the option to complete the 10K at any point in the race

Participants will be required to remain on the trails and within the course boundaries so as to not disturb the natural surroundings. Runners need be conscious of the terrain and exercise care in foot placement.

All runners must review and acknowledge receipt of the Bureau of Land Management Threatened Desert Tortoise Information.

The course will be liberally-marked to ensure participant safety, participant adherence to the course, and ease of following the course.

The mid-May running will see typical temperatures of a high of 88 ⁰F and a low of 60s ⁰F, with no precipitation.

Five aid stations will be located along the course, in addition to the start/finish area.  Aid stations will offer fuel and hydration options in addition to water and Heed electrolyte drink.  Drop bags will be available at all aid stations.  Crew access will be available at the aid stations, but as these are located along rocky dirt roads, car access is not allowed; however, 4×4 vehicular access will be possible.

SUPPORT CREW & PACERS

Crews will be allowed and will have access to the runners from two aid stations on the course, in addition to the Start/Finish Area.  Directions to follow.

Pacers will be allowed for the 100M runners, only.  Runners are eligible for pacing after completion of the first of three loops (at the 31M point).

PERFORMANCE RULES

  • Runners must wear their official race number on the front of their person, where it must be visible at all times.
  • Each runner must complete the entire selected course under their own power in order to be eligible for a finisher coin.  Changes to a different distance are allowed provided they are communicated to an aid station as well as upon completion of the race.
  • Each runner must carry all their own food, fluids and other supplies needed for use between aid stations.
  • Runners may not accept aid from their support crew or any other source while on the course and in between aid stations and designated support locations, except in case of a medical emergency.
  • Any entrant who is unable or does not desire to finish the race must continue to the nearest aid station. The runner must relinquish their race number to the aid station captain and state their decision to withdraw.
  • Absolutely no littering. Please respect the natural beauty of our trails and the rights of everyone to enjoy them.
  • Upon registration, all participants must read information regarding the Threatened Desert Tortoise.  This information must be printed and acknowledged via signature.  Participants must bring these signed forms with them in order to participate in the race, and comply with instructions therein throughout the race.  ERT will have extra forms available race morning.

AIR TRAVEL & LODGING

Participants traveling by air will arrive at McCarran International Airport.

The Cottonwood Trailhead is located in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, about 20 minutes west of Las Vegas, but not in the Scenic Loop Road area. The trailhead is located on Highway 160, west of the intersection with Highway 159 (West Charleston Blvd). This trailhead is not in the fee area.

From town, drive out towards Red Rock. From West Charleston at the entrance to the Scenic Loop Road, continue west on Charleston Blvd (Hwy 159) all the way past Blue Diamond town to Highway 160. Turn right onto Highway 160, towards Pahrump, and drive west for 5.9 miles. Watch for a broad, dirt road on the left, a vault toilet in the distance (200 yards out), and a paved, slow-vehicle passing zone on the right; there is no sign on the highway. Turn left onto the dirt Cottonwood Valley Road and drive south about 200 yards to the large, dirt parking area on the right.  Park here; this is the trailhead.

The Cottonwood Valley Trails are approximately 20 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.  The Start/Finish Area is approximately 10 miles from any lodging.  The following are the closest hotel options:

RACE START & TIME LIMITS

  • 100M and 100K will start at 6:00am
  • 50K will start at 6:30am
  • Half Marathon and 10K will start at 7:00am

Race starts in the Cottonwood Valley Trails dirt parking lot.

Time guidelines for the 100M is 33 hours; however, all runners completing the distance will receive a custom buckle. Those finishing in under 24:00 will receive a silver buckle.  Winners earn a gold buckle.

Guidelines for maximum finish times for all distances are below. We will not pull any runner off the course, provided they remain in good physical and mental condition.
100K: 20 hours
50K:  9 hours

Elemental Running and Training reserves the right to stagger start times in waves, based upon number of final registrants.

PACKET PICK-UP

5:00am – 6:45am

RACE DAY

Please plan to arrive no later than fifteen minutes prior to your race start time if you have picked up your packet.  Drop bags should be placed in the designated and marked area at the Start/Finish Area, and marked with your name and at which aid station you would like the bag to be placed.  Detailed Aid Station information will be posted prior to the event.

All participants will receive a technical shirt, a finisher medal (upon completion of the registered event), and goodie bag with tons of unique and custom swag.  Awards will be presented for the top men’s and women’s finishers in each race.

100M finishers will receive a custom buckle;   100M finishers in 24:00 or less will earn the special edition silver buckle.  100M winners are awarded the gold buckle.  All finishers of the 100K, 50K, and Half Marathon will receive custom finisher medals.

Awards will be presented to the top males and females in all distances.

Each participant will receive a raffle ticket for entry to win one of the raffle prizes provided by Elemental Running and Training and its generous sponsors and partners.   Additional tickets will be available for purchase for $2 each or three for $5.

Winners must be present to receive all finisher awards and raffle prizes.  No awards or prizes will be mailed.

FINISH FESTIVAL

All spectators, crew, friends, and family are welcome to relax at the start/finish area and enjoy the atmosphere while cheering on their runners. Plenty of food and beverages will be available. Pastries, coffee, and juices will be available in the morning, with post-race hot food later in the day. Donations from non-participants will be greatly appreciated and passed along to the designated charitable beneficiary, the Friends of Red Rock.
